Strategies for Sustainable Travel

Ahead of this year’s AITPM national conference focused on sustainable communities we are pleased to present two guest speakers to discuss aspects of sustainable travel. This is an area of significant and increasing interest across government and private industry as we grapple with how to sustain and improve our quality of life and at the same time reduce our impact on the environment.
Robin Hickman will discuss the role of urban planning in ensuring more sustainable mobility. His presentation will review a number of developing areas of work reviewing the influence of urban structure at different spatial scales on travel patterns, and the inter-relationships with socio-economic, attitudinal and other contextual characteristics. Robin’s work includes data analysis using the Great Britain National Travel Survey and draws on work carried out for the UK Commission for Integrated Transport.
Fiona Calvert will discuss the approach being taken by the Department of Transport to make transport more sustainable in Victoria. The discussion will centre on the Transport Integration Act and outline how the development of the link between transport and land use planning may facilitate more sustainable travel. Fiona will outline analysis undertaken to date on how best to reduce the environmental footprints of each mode of transport and consider how to make the transport systems more resilient to changes in climatic conditions.
